MIA
Contest Collaboration
In 2019 Steven Philip and Corey Pieper put together a contest for his upcoming single MIA. Essentially, Philly shot a bunch of performance footage and contestants were asked to make an edit. Anything goes, additional video, animation, literally anything was fine with them. I gave it my best shot, and within a week was able to come up with this. I didn’t win, or even place, but in terms of how I go about production, I learned a lot.
How This Happened
When Philly and Corey first announced the project, I was excited. I just finished a run at the Milwaukee Film Festival showcasing an older music video - Scifly - with my close friend Willie Humbles. While the video was well received, I myself wasn’t too proud of it. Call it post project hate or whatever, but I wanted something new to replace this. I wanted something that would allow me to use some new techniques I learned, and also give me a somewhat “modern” and quick edit feel to it. The project took me about a week to put together, and I rushed to finish before the deadline like crazy. While I didn’t win, benefits of this project were very nice. My list of contacts grew ,I figured out how to properly use a render farm (as well as the average cost), realized the skills I was lacking as well as the ones I had.
To top it off I made a rather nice portfolio piece.
